History

History Progression Map

Intent - A Historian at New Delaval Primary School should:

  •  Stimulate pupils’ curiosity to know more about the past.
  • Observe similarities and differences explaining the significance of historical change
  • Are encouraged to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement
  • Begin to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies.
  • Recognise the relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time.
  • Understand historical concepts such as continuity and change, cause and consequence

Historical Threads

To ensure progress between year groups we have key historical focuses within our topics. We call these concepts ‘threads’ and we build upon these from years 1 to 6. Our key historical concepts are:

  1. Settlements
  2. Culture
  3. Religion
  4. Industry & Invention
  5. Economy
  6. Power & Rule
  7. Empire
  8. Parliament

This document also supports the planning process as teachers are able to look back into previous year groups and identify the coverage of a particular historical concept.

Knowledge Organisers

At New Delaval, we create knowledge organisers to support our pupils during their units of work.

Our Knowledge organisers contain:
  • Key vocabulary - which we also weave through our english and reading sessions.
  • Key questions - these are used to help recap lessons and act as mini plenaries.
  • Images - to support the understanding of vocabulary.

We refer to our knowledge organisers at the start and end of every lesson to help consolidate learning.
