Science Progression Map

Intent – A Scientist at New Delaval Primary School should:

  • Be equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science in our past, present and future.
  • Develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them.
  • Develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding.
  • Ask their own questions and work individually and collectively to find answers.
  • Be inquisitive about the world around them.
  • Develop questioning skills, reasoning and descriptive vocabulary.

The teaching of science at New Delaval Primary School

Teachers refer to "A Creative Approach To Teaching Science" by Nicky Waller when planning their half-termly units. We look for ways to make science investigative and practical to help pupils explore their own lines of enquiry. We aspire for our pupils to leave primary school demonstrating that they can work scientifically.

Last Year      Last Term      Last Week

Every science lesson at New Delaval Primary School begins with the Last Year, Last Term, Last Week approach. Pupils are quizzed on learning from their prior science topics Last Year, Last Term and Last Week. We find this supports our pupils to retain their learning and helps build their confidence within this subject.

Promoting STEM Careers within Science

We have been working closely alongside NUSTEM outreach initiative (Northumbria University Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) to develop our science curriculum to promote STEM careers and expose pupils to a variety of jobs within this field. As we are located close to the Port of Blyth, we believe it is important that our pupils understand STEM and the opportunities within their local area.

From reception to Year 6, pupils learn about these careers linked to their half-term science units and staff reach out to professionals within these areas to help answer questions, lead online calls or come into school to visit the pupils. We believe these experiences are crucial in raising pupils' expectations about life beyond school.

As well as learning about these STEM careers and getting the opportunity to hear or meet these individuals, we also utilise this opportunity to promote key STEM attributes and skills that we believe are crucial to being successful within these roles.  These attributes are: Teamwork, Committed, Communication, Creative, Curious, Resilient, Observant, Open-minded, Organised, Passionate, Patient and Self-motivated. We reflect on these attributes at the end of each lesson and highlight these on our front pages (as shown below).
STEM Careers

As we believe it is important that pupils are exposed to these STEM careers, we inform our families via our monthly newsletter of the careers their child/children have been learning about in science that half-term.
